2002-2003 Jesuit Mock Trial Team
The 2002-2003 Jesuit High School Mock Trial Team was. . .

State Tournament:

The Jesuit White Team traveled to the State Tournament in Monroe.  In the first round, the Jays lost to Bolton High School--the eventual state champion, by the narrow margin of 252-243. In the second round, the Jays became the only team in the entire tournament to win on the defense side, defeating DeRidder High School.  The Jays placed 5th overall in points, missing 4th place by only 1 point.  The Jays were disappointed, but their performance against the eventual champion convinced everyone that we belonged.

There were several highlights in our two rounds of competition.  During the first round, attorney Michael Mims caught and called to the court's attention a Bolton attorney's improper mention of the defense case during the state's opening statement.  During the second round, attorney Michael Tufton notified DeRidder's attorney on cross examination that she had skipped a question that he wanted to answer.  Tommy Slattery raised the possibility of a schizophrenic witness in response to an objection.  Jack Stanton finally objected to a leading question on direct.  Eric Cusimano testifyied that he had placed his hand on the top of the box to verify that it was still sealed.  John Gulotta (after hours of practice on Friday night) finally stopped himself from "going the extra mile for his students" but failed to get a chance to do it on the stand.

The team had a lot of fun on the trip to Monroe. One coach had to explain to a client why he was currently crossing the Mississippi River with a bus full of high school students.  Some of the team debated the relative merits of Incubus and the North Mississippi All-Stars, while others discussed the life and times of Winston Churchill.  Bubba's Truck Stop was like something out of a bad 1970s movie.  Amir read the dictionary. We dined on Filets-O-Fish with a bus full of senior citizens on their way to the casinos and we had to instruct the McDonalds staff on the ingredients of a Big Mac--two all-beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions, on a sesame seed bun. We discussed whether Jimmy Buffet wrote Cheeseburger in Paradise about Camellia Grill.  Some of us heard the trains pass the hotel during the night and some of us didn't.  Everyone played games on their cell phones.  One coach fell asleep on the bus briefly, but woke himself up snoring.

We ate Chili-Cheese Frito's, Hotter-n-Hot Jalapeno Zapps, Bugles, and Nutty Buddies.  We read signs on the bus about maintaining your bus riding privileges, the prohibition against "standees," and the possibility of students becoming attached to the outside of the bus.  Stanton programmed COOKIE TIME into Amir's cell phone. Mrs. Mims asked if we had thunder & lightning on the bus and several of us couldn't stop laughing, but Stanton just shook his head and smiled.  We ate cold pizza with no napkins.  We learned that Amir cannot 360 dunk.  We conversed with Applebee's employees. We had to call Mrs. Cusimano to make sure that Brother Dardis left the gate open for us at 1 a.m.

We all owe a great debt of gratitude to Mr. Israel for taking the laboring oar on the travel arrangements and for acting as our chauffer--albeit in the ugliest vehicle of all time.  The rides were safe and smooth (even with the interruptions necessitated by the micro-bladders) and the accommodations were luxurious.  Mr. Wise's recommendation to eat at the Mohawk Tavern was a huge success, particularly if you ordered the fried catfish (and unless you tried to push two tables together).
